Dipyrone

It is a pyrazolone derivate (aminopyrine). It is anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic, produces relaxation of smooth muscle, particularly in intestinal tract (anti-spasmodic). Inhibits cycloxygenase and cynin responsible of intestinal spasmus. It is excreted mainly in urine, has an elimination half life of 5-6 hours. It is probably than used during long periods of time may cause agranulicytosis and leucopenia.

Since dipyrone is hydrosoluble, it parenteral administration is easy for relief of spasmodic colic. It binds extensively to plasmatic proteins. Elimination speed depends on concentrations, and this is why it is important not to exceed recommended dosing limits.

Dipyrone is used widely for symptomatic relief of pain from lesions in muscle, bones and joints in horses, it effect starts 10 minutes after injectable administration.

It half life in dog is 5 hours and between 80 and 90% is excreted in urine.

Other effect is plaquette aggregation inhibition by a direct effect on endoperoxydase (blocks prostaglandin synthesis) which contributes to its analgesic effect.

It is not recommended for use together with chlorpromazine, because it may induce severe hypothermia. Because of its notable analgesic effect, it is inferred that reaches adequate levels in CNS. May reduce protrombine levels.
