Additional Information
Human Corionic gonadotropin (HCG), is a glicoproteic hormone of high molecular weight, that is secreted during woman’s pregnancy.
It stimulate gonads in several species. HCG is excreted in corionic portion of woman’s placenta and is excreted by urine, from which it can be extracted and purified, it biologic activity is similar to that of LH, because it induces ovulation, besides stimulating corpus luteum for producing progesterone among other effects en females and males.
It contains galactose and hexosamine, wit a molecular wirght of 30,000 and a half life od 8-12 hours. The source of this hormone are citofybroblasts in corionic fibers of human placenta. It can be found in urine a few weeks after labor at reaches a peak approximately at 50 days of pregnancy and declines short after to insignificant quantities. This hormone is the base for “Friedman” pregnancy test using the capability of woman’s urine to induce ovulation in female rabbit.
HGC is a non expensive hormone that remedies to certain extent effects of LH promoting ovulation in the mare at the time of mating and is a therapeutic agent for inducing luteinization and possibly ovulation en cystic ovaries associated with nymphomania in cattle. Frequently cryptorquidism reacts to therapy with HCG if inguinal canal is viable. Continuous administration may be practiced, nevertheless antibodies anti-hormone and anaphylactic reactions may appear.
